My Story: How I Learned French

I love sharing how I learned French!

Back in 2011, I started taking French classes at my local community college as a hobby, but even after I had already taken 4 semesters of French, I still couldn’t speak well!

I was so disappointed that I couldn’t hold a conversation in French after studying for 2 years, but then I found a French language group on meetup.com !!

We’d meet every week and practice conversing in French, and that’s how I learned to put into practice what I learned in French class.

A lot of times, if you’ve been studying French for awhile, you don’t necessarily need to learn more words / expressions, you need to learn how to string together what you already know and how to communicate effectively.

Later I moved to Paris and studied French at the graduate level, but you don’t necessarily have to do that!

In my experience, most French learners just want to have a basic conversation with relative ease, which is totally doable with the right technique and consistent practice!

Language is a tool for connection! It’s not about apps / textbooks / classes / drills / exercises (though those have their place).

So remember, in order to get good at French, you can’t do it alone! You need to practice with other people, there’s just no other way to do it.

I hope that helps you!!
