✅Want to Sound More Natural? ❌Stop Using the Future Tense 😅🇫🇷

Bonjour !

It’s funny how I learned the “futur simple” in French class in the US, but when I moved to Paris I noticed that people really don’t use it that much in conversation (though of course there are exceptions).

It’s much more common to use the “futur proche”.

So instead of:
Qu’est-ce que tu feras ce soir ? - What will you do tonight? (This correct, but it sounds too formal / literary for most everyday conversations)

It sounds much more natural to say:
Qu’est-ce que tu vas faire ce soir ? - What’re you going to do tonight?

Or even:
Tu fais quoi ce soir ? - What’re you doing tonight? (But this would probably be marked wrong on a French test)

And even in English (my native language), I would almost never say “What will you do tonight?” (I’ve heard it’s similar in other languages like Spanish, Italian, German, etc)

Here are a few common exceptions:

Ça ira - It’ll be ok
On verra - We’ll see
Je serai là - I’ll be there

I recently made a little YouTube video about this, but if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask

À bientôt !

-Charlie
