How to Easily Grow Your French Vocabulary 😎🇫🇷

Bonjour !

One reason why someone might have a hard time speaking or even just understanding a foreign language is because they don’t know enough words.

So I came up with a great way to build your French vocabulary that’s fun and not too difficult. I love sharing this technique with my private French students and I’ve really seen it help them learn a lot of new words.

Quora.com is one of my favorite sites for learning languages (this email is not sponsored by them, I really just love this site) and it’s completely free.

Quora emails you little blogs based on your interests everyday. It’s really important to read/watch things that genuinely interest you as the more you care about a topic, the more engaged you will be.

I tell my clients to keep it very light and fun. Whenever they have some downtime in the day, they could read a little in French. 10-15 minutes of reading practice really starts to add up over time.

Often from context you can figure out a lot of words/phrases you don’t know, but if you ever see something you don’t understand you could just look it up on: www.wordreference.com.

Here are some more tips to help you get the most out of Quora:

  1. Read the title for context. This will go a long way in helping you understand the blog.

  2. If you’re a beginner, focus on the general sense of what the blog is about, not necessarily every single word.

  3. Note down interesting words and expressions. You will surely see them again.

  4. Practice everyday!

This is how I use the site (I’m currently working on my Spanish):

In the morning I wake up and scroll through the email Quora sent me to see if any blogs catch my interest. I then read through the article in a very light, not stressful kind of way.

It’s fine if I don’t understand everything !! I’m focusing more on the general sense of the blog and ENJOYING using the language (it’s so important for language learning to be enjoyable, I’ll write more about this sometime).

I then note down words/expressions I like so that I can use them when I converse in Spanish or so I can ask some Spanish speaking friends questions.

I hope that helps you!! If you have any questions, send me a DM on Instagram I’d love to help you

À bientôt !
