Why You Can’t Remember French Vocab/Phrases 🇫🇷
The reason why you have trouble remembering French vocabulary and phrases is very simple: one of your brain’s primary functions is to forget information that is not useful to you!
Could you imagine what life would be like if you never forgot anything? You’d remember useless information like a phone number to a restaurant you ate at 5 years ago or exactly how much you paid for your groceries last week.
It would really cloud your thinking and make your daily life very difficult!
So if you don’t use French in some capacity regularly, you’re basically telling your brain to go ahead and forget it because it’s not something you will use.
How to remember what you learn:
Learn words and phrases that are relevant to your life
Use what you learn in some way: in conversation with a francophone friend, journal, read or hear the word again in a blog post, etc
I wrote a blog about a great way you can get in some daily French practice by changing the language on your phone to French and also how you can grow your vocabulary in 15-20 min a day.
So don’t beat yourself up if you’ve been staring at flash cards and it hasn’t helped you progress your French!
Remember, language is a tool to be used. To be proficient at French, you have to use it!
